Vivah & Pheras (Jain)

The Jain marriage rites — the couple's garments are knotted and they take vows around the sacred fire.

Also known as: jain wedding, jain pheras, granthi bandhan, phera

What it means

The Jain vivah shares much of its structure with other Indian weddings but is framed by Jain values of non-violence (ahimsa) and restraint, and opens with the Navkar Mantra. The Granthi Bandhan ties the couple's garments together, and the pheras (circuits, accompanied by vows) around the sacred fire bind them as partners committed to a righteous shared life.
