Nikah

The Islamic marriage contract — the couple consents before witnesses and the Nikahnama is signed.

Also known as: nikah, nikkah, marriage contract, ijab qubool

What it means

The Nikah is a sacred contract of mutual consent. Officiated by a qazi or imam, it centres on the proposal and acceptance (Ijab-o-Qubool), the agreed Mahr (a gift/sum the groom gives the bride as her right), and the signing of the Nikahnama before witnesses. Consent freely given by both parties is essential.

What happens

  1. 1The qazi/imam explains the terms and the Mahr is agreed.
  2. 2The proposal and acceptance (Ijab-o-Qubool) are made — traditionally affirmed three times.
  3. 3The Nikahnama is signed by the couple and witnesses; prayers and blessings (often including a Khutbah) follow.

Regional variations

  • Practices and the degree of separation between men's and women's gatherings vary by community and family.
This explanation is under review by a religious authority — a companion to, not a replacement for, your qazi or imam.
