Doli (Sikh farewell)

The bride's emotional departure to the groom's home after the Anand Karaj.

Also known as: doli, sikh vidaai, farewell

What it means

As in other traditions, the Doli marks the bride leaving her parental home. She traditionally throws phulian (puffed rice) over her shoulder, a gesture of gratitude and prosperity for the home she leaves behind.

What happens

  1. 1The bride bids farewell to her family.
  2. 2She tosses phulian back toward her parents' home and departs with the groom.
