What it means
The baraat is the groom's joyous journey to the wedding venue with his family and friends. It celebrates the groom being escorted to claim his bride, and traditionally the groom arrives on a decorated horse (ghodi).
What happens
- 1The groom travels to the venue, often on a horse, in a car, or other decorated vehicle.
- 2Family and friends dance ahead of him to the dhol or a band.
- 3The procession arrives at the venue gate where the bride's family receives them.
Regional variations
- A young relative ('sehrabandi'/'sarbala') sometimes accompanies the groom as a protector.
