What it means

The bride is welcomed into the groom's home as the new Lakshmi (goddess of prosperity) of the household. She traditionally enters by knocking over a small vessel of rice with her right foot, symbolising the prosperity and abundance she brings.

What happens

  1. 1An aarti is performed at the threshold to welcome the bride.
  2. 2She gently topples a kalash/vessel of rice with her right foot before stepping in.
  3. 3Welcome games and rituals follow to integrate her into the new home.
